Power Trip was good for what it was and Crooked Smile was an enjoyable song at the least. The two singles and Truly Yours EPs that proceeded the album (how Chris Tucker faded into obscurity I will never understand) were solid. clowns have the audacity to put it in the same breath as Yeezus and b. The only reason I even remember that album exists is because a. Cole I was 100% referring to the abysmal Born Sinner. When I coined the (patents pending) term “audio Nyquil” to describe J. Work Out is still flames, Can’t Tell Enough got some genuine laughs, and overall there was enough to make me forget that god-awful line about being the shit in Dolla & a Dream III. Nice Watch wasn’t fire though), but the album itself did a good job of what it aimed to do (also “not gonna cut it like some scissors on my lawn shit” alone puts this album up there). Sure, you can hear Cole’s attempts at branching out (don’t try to tell me Mr. Surprisingly, out of his three studio albums it’s the one I still enjoy listening to most. With this in mind, I wasn’t expecting shit from Cole World.

With the abundance of freeleases (which I’m personally very opposed to, if you want me to buy your album don’t release free music that pretty much equates to an album), an artist’s debut is usually a progressive step back, trying to strike a balance between maintaining what brought forth success but also trying to build upon the foundation in order to appease to a wider audience. It’s as if the rap gods are telling you pause, at least drop a couple albums before you make a classic. “Fuck, he’s gonna keep making music and there’s no way it’s going to be as good as this.” Chalk it up to NaS, but Illmatic Syndrome is painstakingly real. Don’t think I need to say more in regards to that. Shit, I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve tried to spit game at girls recycling lines from In the Morning. I remember listening to Friday Night Lights over spring break of freshman year and being blown away by everything about it, from the production to the passion to the relatability of his lyrics. I honestly don’t even know how Wale’s career recovered after that. My first exposure to him was when he absolu tely washed Wale on Beautiful Bliss.
